The Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Dr. Lawrence Anukam, has explained why government is considering the health problems associated with chemicals.
He said there might be an increase in skin cancer, cataracts and low yields of stable food crops in the country, due to the use of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).
Anukam added that the effects of the harmful substances regime are exceedingly disturbing and government is committed to fulfilling its obligations to stop it.
He expressed the need for the safe disposal of ODS by reviewing the amended National Environmental Regulations (NER) of 2009, aimed at providing people with a healthy environment upon which the natural ecology can be developed and sustained.
Anukam explained that the adverse effects of ODS have increasingly become an important issue, which attests to the ozone layer of the atmosphere playing a major role.
The layer protects life on earth by preventing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
